Self-Care

Take a moment.        Feel your inhale.        Now feel your exhale.

Self Care

Challenge Yourself

Challenge yourself to take 10 or 15 minutes during your day to stop, close your eyes, listen to calming and relaxing sounds, and think of nothing but you.  Do not think of the work that needs to be done, meetings you need to plan, documents you need to take care of, students, supervisors, employees, your partner,  children, nothing.  Only think of yourself relaxing and there is nothing to do except too take care of you.

Schedule a brief 10 minutes on your calendar.  Close your office door.  If you do not have an office, sit in your car, go to a quiet study room with no distractions, reserve a conference room, find that quiet place.  If you are working remotely, create your own space (bedroom, study, backyard, where ever you can find peace). Try not to use a space where others frequent because they will  disrupt your "ME" time.  If you teach, then your "ME" time may occur between classes or after all your classes have ended.  It will be difficult at first, and you will tell yourself that you do not have the time. But it is okay to make time. Do not feel guilty, you deserve it.  If you try this right before lunch, you will find that you are able to digest your food better.  Or, try taking your 10 minutes just before going into that challenging or difficult meeting (virtual or in person).  You will find that your mood will be responsive rather than reactive.  Maybe your 10 minutes will be at home after you put the children down for the night.  Take a long hot bath with your calming scents and soothing music (no lyrics).  You will be amazed how peaceful you will sleep.

These quick 10 minutes will result in a healthier you by relieving your stress, eating slower and healthier, having a good night rest, all while maintaining a positive attitude and feeling rejuvenated when you awake. Control your atmosphere by turning your space into a calming relaxing sanctuary.  Spray a little lavender or eucalyptus, put out fresh flowers or whatever soothes you, breathe deeply, slowly exhale, and relax......You deserve it!
